About this event
Thursday, November 12th, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Burke’s Book Store will host a book signing and reading with Corey Mesler for his two new novels, Memphis Movie Two (WhiskeyTit, $20 paperback) and Happy Happy (Livingston Press, $22 paperback). The reading will begin at 6:00.
Memphis Movie Two: The Recrudescence of Eric Warberg: A most improbable adventure in filmmaking is happening once more in the city on the bluffs of the Mississippi. Along for the ride are some old faces, some new faces, a few ghosts, and a handful of movie stars. While a sequel to Memphis Movie, the new novel is also a love story, a book about books, and a paean to the sempiternal Southern hoodoo of Memphis.
"Corey Mesler has an encyclopedic knowledge about books, movies and Memphis and when you whip them all together with a dash of zany and rapid-fire dialogue, you’ve got Memphis Movie Two: the Recrudescence of Eric Warberg, a fast-paced, wild romp, complete with suggested cast.” ---Jill McCorkle, author of Old Crimes and Other Stories and Ferris Beach
Happy Happy is a novel based on Mesler’s years of suffering with agoraphobia. The narrator/protagonist/author’s stand-in of Happy, Happy, Col Merrysee, through luck and love, stumbles into joy with a woman perfectly suited to him. They marry. have kids, travel. Life is good and Col never takes it for granted that he is blessed; he is agog at the sweet serendipity of his adult life. Then, Col is struck by what he labels, “lunatic lightning.” He experiences a physical anomaly, coupled with irrational fear, merely from being in public.
“A true delight. By fashioning a novel about the woes and passions of one man, Mesler manages to pull off a small miracle---an irresistible book about our human condition.” ---Richard Ford
COREY MESLER has published in numerous journals and anthologies as well as 24 novels and books of short stories, and 37 books of poetry. With his wife, he runs Burke’s Book Store in Memphis TN, one of the country’s oldest (1875) and best independent bookstores
