If you've wondered whether Regional One's new hospital has stalled, its CEO says no. “The project’s not on hold,” Dr. Reginald Coopwood said in a one-on-one interview about the $900 million campus. The hurdle is money: Shelby County has committed around $500 million, and Regional One still needs hundreds of millions more.
Coopwood said the gap would have to come from philanthropy, and Regional One also plans to ask the state for help. Until that money is secured, he said, starting major construction spending wouldn't be responsible. Land is being cleared meanwhile: the Daily Memphian reported Oct. 26 that work continued at 495 Union Ave., the former Commercial Appeal site.
- Planning: underway for nearly two and a half years
- Planning teams: 30 to 50 people, meeting every two weeks
- Build time: two and a half to three years once work begins
Regional One's hospital needs money and room to grow
- $400 million
- to $450 million, the gap to raise through philanthropy
- 13,000
- to 15,000 trauma visits a year; it was built for 3,000 to 5,000
- 2030
- or 2031: possible finish, if funding is secured

Coopwood's message to Memphis: “Hold on.” If you have the means, he'd love you to consider giving.
