Reason Round Table: A weekly discussion group for thoughtful, curious people

About this event

The Ethics of Dynamic Pricing: Once confined to airlines, algorithmic pricing now dictates the cost of Uber rides, Ticketmaster seats, and even grocery store digital tags. Proponents argue that tracking supply and demand in real time maximizes resource allocation and rewards flexible consumers. Critics, however, contend that fluctuating prices strip transparency from the marketplace, penalize essential needs, and erode trust. This shift raises a deeper philosophical question: Is it ethical to charge someone more simply because their need is urgent, or should a fair society draw a line where supply-and-demand mechanics cross into predatory behavior? Is dynamic pricing a triumph of market efficiency or a modern form of corporate exploitation?
